2012 TheCup.us Player of the Round: Artur Aghasyan selection gives Cal FC third honor in a row
Move over Kardashians, there is a new star Armenian in Los Angeles. Cal FC striker Artur Aghasyan was selected as the Third Round’s TheCup.us US Open Cup Player of the Round for providing the game-winning overtime strike in the historic upset against the Portland Timbers. It was his third consecutive game with a goal.
The selection marks only the second time since TheCup.us began recognizing the tournament’s outstanding performances in 2006 that a team has had a player chosen three times in a tournament or in consecutive rounds. The previous time came in 2010 when the Seattle Sounders saw Nate Jaqua earn the honor in the semifinals and quarterfinals followed by Sanna Nyassi for the final.
Aghasyan’s selection followed two for teammate Danny Barrera, who was recognized for his pair of goals in a 3-1 road win over the PDL champion Kitsap Pumas and for tallying two goals and an assist in a record 4-0 victory on the road versus the USL Pro Wilmington Hammerheads.
The Player of the Round award is voted on by the staff of the definitive US Open Cup site TheCup.us and a selected panel of members of the North American Soccer Reporters (@SoccerReporters), which also selects the MLS Player of the Week.
After enduring shot after shot and attack after attack from Portland, Cal FC finally got its chance five minutes in overtime with a breakaway created by Barrera, who managed to deliver a ball while falling to the pitch. Aghasyan streaked down the middle of the field, easily beating a lopsided offside trap, collected a well-placed through ball and calmly chipped Perkins. As his teammates mobbed him in the northeast corner of the stadium, the crowd fell silent.
Scoring the lone goal put Aghasyan back in the headlines. He had tallied the insurance goal late versus Kitsap and provided the second goal in Wilmington. Aghasyan is no stranger to success having previously led the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion to a league championship in 2009 after an outstanding start to his professional career in Armenia, where he led Pyunik of the nation’s first division with a league-leading 16 goals in 25 games as a rookie.
However, his jump to the professional ranks in the United States was much more difficult. After his PDL success, he went on to sign in 2011 with Real Salt Lake after a stint with Chivas USA in the MLS Reserve League. He would make only four appearances for RSL before being released and signed by the LA Blues of USL Pro.

Artur Aghasyan, an Armenian player who played for Pyunik and several youth Armenian teams and is the cousin of Yura Movsisyan did the improbable, by beating MLS side
PortlandTimbers 1-0 in the US OPEN cup 3rd round to progress to the 4th round.
Artur Aghasyan scored in the first overtime and Cal FC, an amateur team coached by former U.S. national team standout Eric Wynalda, upset the Portland Timbers 1-0 in a third-round match of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.
Aghasyan, who played for a time last season with Real Salt Lake, charged Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins in the 95th minute and rifled the ball into the goal as Perkins slid on the turf.

RSL Adds Forward ArturAghasyan
SANDY,
Utah (Friday, May 27, 2011) – Real Salt Lake today
announced the signing of forward Artur Aghasyan to the Utah side. Per
club policy, contract terms will not be disclosed. Aghasyan will be available for
selection on Saturday when RSL plays host to Seattle Sounders FC at Rio Tinto Stadium (7:00 p.m. MT kickoff). With injuries and nation team call-ups
depleting Real Salt Lake’s forward corps leading into a busy June schedule, the
Utah side called in Aghasyan to bolster its attack at least through the
duration of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The 23-year-old Aghasyan
is familiar to the Claret-and-Cobalt, as the cousin of former RSL member Yura
Movsisyan was invited to participate in the team’s 2009 preseason camp in
Southern California and was placed on the squad’s Discovery player list with a
potential
signing in mind. With Real Salt Lake’s unprecedented lack of depth up
top in the short term, the former Armenian youth national team product will
finally get his chance to impress in the North American top flight after trying
to crack the ranks of MLS for the last three
preseasons, once with RSL and
twice with Chivas USA. Aghasyan started his playing career in his native
Armenia in the youth sides of F.C. Banants before beginning his professional days
with Pyunik FC and Ullises F.C. Upon moving to the United States in 2007 with
his family, the striker landed with USL Premier Development League squad
Ventura County Fusion, where he scored 16 goals across two PDL seasons.

ALSO JOINING CAMP: Local Armenian forward/midfielder Artur Aghasyan, who was in camp last season with the Goats, joined the group Monday. The longtime Ventura County Fusion favorite, a cousin of former RSL striker Yura Movsisyan (now based in Russia), trialed at Real Salt Lake when Fraser was on staff.

“I saw him a couple years ago … there’s something to his game, for sure, and we [at RSL] liked him,” Fraser said. “He at the time wasn’t probably quite ready for that team, but it’s a couple years later. He’s certainly a player who has some physical tools, so I’m curious to see how he’s developed in the last three years. … I haven’t seen him in a couple years, but last time I saw him, I liked him.”
MLS Camp Update: New face impresses Chivas USA
One such surprise among the new players has been the play of Armenian youth international Artur Aghasyan. The 23-year-old forward has been impressive in training during the past few weeks scoring goals in three of the club’s five preseason games.
Called a tireless worker by his teammates, the former member of PDL outfit Ventura County Fusion has made an impression on his coach as someone who can be a valuable contributor for el Rebano Angelino.
“(Aghasyan) came to our combine and we invited him in for a second practice session and then for our preseason,” said Vasquez. “This kid is just enjoying himself and proving that he can play at this level.”
Friday, the trialist showed further development, sliding into two goals during scrimmages and showing immense confidence in front of goal.
“The first time I came here, it was very different, but after I got more comfortable, I have gotten more confident and right now I feel very good,” said Aghasyan. “We have a great coach here and we are really feeling (his words) on the field.”

ChivasUSA@2010
Artur Aghasyan
Current Chivas USA trialist, Artur Aghasyan, has scored 4 goals in 3 preseason matches for the Home Depot-based club. Many of you may say, “who is Artur Aghasyan?” Others may remember him from a brief stint with Real Salt Lake last pre-season in Oxnard, California. Aghasyan played as a guest for Real Salt Lake against Shandong Luneng Taishan, after playing against RSL in a previous exhibition match with his Ventura County Fusion club. He notched a goal in the 77th minute of that match as RSL routed the Chinese side 6-0.
Aghasyan is a bit of a legend in the Ventura area, and has a following, especially among the local Armenian community. But before anyone gets too excited, goals can be much easier to come by in the preseason especially against lower level competition. Either way, this is a guy to keep your eye on:
EDIT: I wasn’t aware of this, but apparently Artur is Yura Movsisyan’s cousin.
Artur Aghasyan & Anthony Hamilton / Interview
Fusion enters playoffs on solid footing : Soccer : Ventura County Star
In every partnership there are two individuals, each with a separate story.
For Ventura County Fusion strike partners Anthony Hamilton and Artur Aghasyan, their journeys could not have been more different.
Aghasyan grew up playing on harsh fields made mostly of dirt in Armenia. Hamilton saw little playing time in his first three years of high school soccer, battling a wealth of injuries.
Aghasyan eventually competed in Armenia’s first division, for national power Pyunik. Hamilton did the same in the U.S., taking the field for Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA.
Aghasyan speaks Armenian. Hamilton speaks English. But the two have forged a partnership that has helped lead Fusion to the team’s first Premier Development League playoff berth in franchise history.
“Collectively, they’ve worked well together,” said Fusion general manager Ranbir Shergill. “They’ve learned to play together, growing up in different surroundings, different environments.”
The Fusion has lost just one match this season with Aghasyan and Hamilton as the starting strikers, a 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Legends last Sunday night.
The Fusion hosts the Legends tonight at Buena Stadium in the PDL Southwest Conference semifinals.
Aghasyan first came to the United States two years ago after coming up through the Pyunik FC youth system and appearing for Armenia’s under-19 national team. Pyunik has won the Armenian Premier League each year this decade. Aghasyan’s family won a green card and he moved to Southern California two years ago.
“When I came here, everything changed.” Aghasyan said, “I thought, ‘Right now, I’m starting from zero.’ ”
Aghasyan was forced to start over on and off the field. He helps support his family by working graveyard shifts at a hotel in Glendale, often going to work immediately following games.
“I’m amazed because he always has so much energy,” Hamilton said, “He’s been at every single training session and been on time.”
Aghasyan continues to improve his English — something Hamilton believes has helped build their strike partnership.
“At the beginning it was hard because he couldn’t really communicate,” Hamilton said. “We’ve just developed an understanding.”
Fusion head coach Graham Smith has a slightly different take.
“Communication takes the form of many guises,” said Smith. “It can be verbal, audible, or visual. For them, it’s a mix.”
The pair has begun to mesh because Hamilton, too, has had to overcome difficult circumstances.
Hamilton fought through groin and ankle injuries his first three years at Colton High and saw little playing time as a freshman and sophomore at UC Irvine.
Still, the Redlands native remained persistent and amassed 23 goals in his final two seasons at UCI, which earned him a spot at Chivas USA’s player combine in December 2006. The club drafted Hamilton 31st overall in Graham Smith and Artur Aghasyan
the 2007 supplemental draft, but released him earlier this year after MLS teams were forced to cut rosters to 24 players.
Hamilton appeared in seven MLS matches.
“It’s frustrating, but you get a sense of how much of a blessing it is every time you can step on the field,” Hamilton said. “I can give everything that I have and never hold anything back.”
The attitudes of Hamilton and Aghasyan haven given them a superior work ethic — in matches and on the training ground.
“They have lived in an environment which hasn’t been conducive to allowing them opportunities,” Smith said. “As a consequence, when they’ve been given the opportunities, they take the chance.”
Both players have taken advantage of their opportunities this year, tying for the team lead in goals with eight.
“We’re a good partnership and we’re working hard together,” Aghasyan said. “I know what he’s gonna do, so I’m waiting for every movement.”
